Editing a Type Safely

Types will evolve as the business changes. Before editing a Type that already has records, understand who uses it and which views, formulas, workflows, and integrations depend on its fields.

Make deliberate changes

  • test significant changes with representative records
  • prefer clear additions over repurposing a field with a different meaning
  • be cautious when deleting or changing fields used by formulas or automation
  • communicate layout or workflow changes to the people affected
  • review the migration choice before applying the new Type to existing records

You can open a record and select Record > Edit Type, or customize a Type from the Type selection screen. Saving creates the updated Type, after which AnyDB can migrate existing records to the new version.

Treat migration as part of the design change not as a final checkbox. Confirm that current data still has a clear place in the updated structure.
